Piano Syllabus 2022

The rules and guidelines below are specific to the Piano Category. Please ensure you have thoroughly read all of the Pacific Youth Music Festival Rules and Regulations.

COMPETITIVE CATEGORIES

PIANO SOLO CLASSES:

PARTICIPANTS MAY SELECT ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:

  • One Competitive Category (Level or Age)
  • One Competitive Category (Level or Age) and Non-competitive Class
  • Non-competitive Class

PRELIMINARY ROUND

  1. Each participant must perform TWO pieces of contrasting musical styles, one of which must be from the Baroque or the Classical Era.
    1. For example, a Prelude and Fugue may be played with one movement of a Classical Sonata; two contrasting movements from the same classical sonata constitute one musical selection.
    2. For Level 10 & Diploma levels, one or more movements from the same sonata may be played as one selection, providing both repertoire selections chosen are within the time limit.
  2. Selections belonging to two different levels under The Royal Conservatory of Music’s current Piano Syllabus but to the same Level Category may be registered under the Level Category (Example: Selections from Levels 5 and 6 may be registered under the Junior Category). Selections that fall under two different Level Categories must be registered under the Age Category. (Example: Selections from Levels 6 and 7 must be registered under the participant’s Age Category.)
  3. Participants with selections that are not included in The Royal Conservatory of Music’s Piano Syllabi must enter under the Age Category.
  4. Music must be memorized, or no marks will be given.
  5. Only participants with an average mark of 90% and above will be considered for the Gala Competition; however, achieving an average of 90% and above does not guarantee placement at the Gala Competition.
  6. Names and marks of participants selected to advance to the Gala Competition (the “finalist”) in each category will be posted online by November 24, 2022, 11:59PM PST.

ADJUDICATION PROCEDURE

  1. The Preliminary Round will be adjudicated by three professional adjudicators appointed by Pacific International Youth Music Society.
  2. The Pacific Youth Music Festival will operate on the following Grading System for all competitive solo classes:
Platinum: 90% and above
Gold: 85% – 89%
Silver: 80% – 84%
Bronze: 75% – 79%
  1. All participants will receive written critiques and certificate of participation at the end of the individual session.
  2. First and Second Place of the individual session will be announced at the end of each session. However, receiving First or Second Place of the individual session doesn’t guarantee placement at the Gala Competition.
  3. All marks will be emailed to the participants and their teachers within 24 hours after the last section of the Category.
  4. Up to two finalists from each Competitive Category will be selected, based on the adjudicators’ recommendations, to compete at the Gala Competition. The adjudicators reserve the right to declare one or no finalist in any Competitive Category advancing to the Gala Competition.
  5. The adjudicators’ decisions are final.

CONCERTO CLASS

ADJUDICATION PROCEDURE

  1. Concerto Class will be adjudicated by two professional adjudicators appointed by Pacific International Youth Music Society.
  2. The Pacific Youth Music Festival will operate on the following Grading System for concerto classes:
Platinum: 90% and above
Gold: 85% – 89%
Silver: 80% – 84%
Bronze: 75% – 79%
  1. Orchestra parts must be performed with piano accompaniment where required. Students must provide their own collaborative pianist. Recorded accompaniment is not permitted. The participant may contact the Festival for a list of available collaborative pianists.
  2. Within the time limit, the participant may perform a complete miniature work, one or two contrasting movements from the same concerto.
  3. Collaborative pianists only: Photocopy may be used to facilitate page turns as long as originals are clearly visible on the piano. Failure to display an original copy will disqualify the participant.
  4. Memorization is mandatory for soloists.
  5. No rehearsals or warm up opportunities will be allowed at any venue or prior to a festival class.
  6. ONE Winner will be selected from ALL PIANO & VIOLIN CONCERTO PARTICIPANTS during the Preliminary Round.
NON-COMPETITIVE CATEGORIES

  1. Participants may perform one or more repertoire up to the time limit.
  2. Written critiques will be emailed to the participants and teachers.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
  1. Pedal extensions are allowed but are the responsibility of the participant and are not supplied by the Festival.
  2. Personal piano bench is not allowed.
  3. Accurate performance times are necessary for class scheduling, and to avoid disqualification for exceeding class time limits.
GALA COMPETITION

PIANO SOLO CLASSES:

  1. Up to TWO finalists from each Solo Classes will be selected from each category to perform at the Gala Competition based on the adjudicators’ recommendations.
  2. Finalists must perform one piece from the Preliminary Round selected by the adjudicator.
  3. Performers selected to play at the Gala Competition will be notified via email by the end of the Preliminary Competition Day.
  4. If selected, finalists must be available to perform to be eligible for scholarships.
  5. Awards will be presented in the form of scholarships. Winners will be announced at the end of the Gala Competition.
  6. Judging panel at the Gala Competition consists of 4 adjudicators. No marks and critiques will be given.

CONCERTO CLASS:

  1. ONE Winner will be selected from ALL PIANO & VIOLIN CONCERTO PARTICIPANTS during the Preliminary Round.
  2. Winner must perform at the Gala Competition to receive the $300 scholarship.
  3. Orchestra parts must be performed with piano accompaniment where required. Students must provide their own collaborative pianist. Recorded accompaniment is not permitted. The participant may contact the Festival for a list of available collaborative pianists.
  4. The soloist must provide his/her own accompanist. The festival committee does not arrange or supply accompanist.
