Festival Structure 2018

Participants may elect to enter one of the following:

  1. One solo class category (Grade Category or Age Category)
  2. One concerto class
  3. One solo class category (Grade Category or Age Category) AND one concerto class

 

PIANO GRADE CATEGORIES AND AGE CATEGORIES:

Novice Introductory to Grade 3
Junior Grade 4 to 6
Intermediate Grade 7 to 8
Senior Grade 9 to 10
Diploma Diploma & above

 

Age 6 to 8
Age 9 to 12
Age 13 to 15
Age 16 to 19

 

Preliminary Round:

Location : Unitarian Church of Vancouver
949 49th Avenue West, Vancouver, BC
Date : November 2 – 8, 2018
  1. Each participant must perform two pieces of contrasting musical styles, one of which must be from the Baroque or the Classical era. For example, a Prelude and Fugue may be played with one movement of a Classical Sonata; two contrasting movements from the same classical sonata constitute one musical selection. For Grade 10 & diploma levels, one or more movements from the same sonata may be played as one selection, providing both repertoire selections chosen are within the time limit.
  2. Each participant will receive a verbal and a written critique at the end of each class.
  3. The mark will be emailed to the participant and teacher after the last session of the category. The name and the mark of the two finalists will be posted online within 24 hours after the last session of the category.
  4. Both repertoires must be 90% and above to be considered for the Gala competition. Gala. Adjudicators’ decision is final.
  5. Adjudicator may select up to two finalists to perform at the Gala competition.
  6. Time Limit for each category:

Grade Categories:

a. Novice Introductory to Grade 3 3 minutes
b. Junior Grade 4 to 6 6 minutes
c. Intermediate Grade 7 to 8 12 minutes
d. Senior Grade 9 to 10 18 minutes
e. Diploma Diploma & above 22 minutes

Age Categories:

a. Age 6 to 8 10 minutes
b. Age 9 to 12 12 minutes
c. Age 13 to 15 15 minutes
d. Age 16 to 19 20 minutes
  1. Time limits will be strictly enforced and adhered to. Participants will be disqualified if time limit is exceeded.

 

Gala Competition:

Location : Richmond Gateway Theatre
6500 Gilbert Road, Richmond
Date : November 10 , 2018 7:00 PM
  1. Up to two finalists will be selected from each category to perform at the Gala competition based on the adjudicators’ recommendations.
  2. Finalists must perform one piece from the Preliminary Round selected by the adjudicator.
  3. Performers selected to play at the Gala competition will be notified via email by the end of the Preliminary competition day. A high mark does not guarantee participation at the Gala competition.
  4. If selected as Gala finalists, participants must be available to perform to be eligible for scholarships.
  5. Awards will be presented in the form of scholarships. Winners will be announced at the end of the Gala competition.
  6. Judging panel at the Gala competition consists of 3 adjudicators. No marks and critiques will be given.

PIANO CONCERTO CLASSES:

Age 8 to 11
Age 12 to 14

Preliminary Round:

  1. Orchestra parts are to be played on a second piano. Taped accompaniment is not allowed.
  2. The participant must provide his/her own accompanist. The festival committee does not arrange or supply accompanist.
  3. Within the time limit, the participant may perform a complete miniature work, one or two contrasting movements from the same concerto.
  4. Accompanists only: A photocopy may be used to facilitate page turns as long as originals are clearly visible on the piano. Failure to display an original copy will disqualify the participant.
  5. Memorization is mandatory for soloist.
  6. No rehearsals or warm up opportunities will be allowed in any venue or prior to a festival class.
  7. ONE Winner will be selected from ALL CLASSES.

 

Gala Competition:

  1. Winner of the concerto class must perform at the Gala competition in order to receive the $300 scholarship.
  2. Orchestra parts are to be played on a second piano. Taped accompaniment is not allowed.
  3. The participant must provide his/her own accompanist. The festival committee does not arrange or supply accompanist.
